The Brassica oleracea genome reveals the asymmetrical evolution of polyploid genomes

چکیده
Polyploidization has provided much genetic variation for plant adaptive evolution, but the mechanisms by which the molecular evolution of polyploid genomes establishes genetic architecture underlying species differentiation are unclear. Brassica is an ideal model to increase knowledge of polyploid evolution. Here we describe a draft genome sequence of Brassica oleracea, comparing it with that of its sister species B. rapa to reveal numerous chromosome rearrangements and asymmetrical gene loss in duplicated genomic blocks, asymmetrical amplification of transposable elements, differential gene co-retention for specific pathways and variation in gene expression, including alternative splicing, among a large number of paralogous and orthologous genes. Genes related to the production of anticancer phytochemicals and morphological variations illustrate consequences of genome duplication and gene divergence, imparting biochemical and morphological variation to B. oleracea. This study provides insights into Brassica genome evolution and will underpin research into the many important crops in this genus.

Comparative mapping of Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica oleracea chromosomes reveals islands of conserved organization.
The chromosomes of Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica oleracea have been extensively rearranged since the divergence of these species; however, conserved regions are evident. Eleven regions of conserved organization were detected, ranging from 3.7 to 49.6 cM in A. thaliana, spanning 158.2 cM (24.6%) of the A. thaliana genome, and 245 cM (29.9%) of the B. oleracea genome. At least 17 translocatio...
متن کاملComparative analysis between homoeologous genome segments of Brassica napus and its progenitor species reveals extensive sequence-level divergence.
Homoeologous regions of Brassica genomes were analyzed at the sequence level. These represent segments of the Brassica A genome as found in Brassica rapa and Brassica napus and the corresponding segments of the Brassica C genome as found in Brassica oleracea and B. napus. Analysis of synonymous base substitution rates within modeled genes revealed a relatively broad range of times (0.12 to 1.37...
متن کاملComparison of a Brassica oleracea genetic map with the genome of Arabidopsis thaliana.
Brassica oleracea is closely related to the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. Despite this relationship, it has been difficult to both identify the most closely related segments between the genomes and determine the degree of genome replication within B. oleracea relative to A. thaliana. These difficulties have arisen in part because both species have replicated genomes, and the criteria used ...
متن کاملGenome resequencing and comparative variome analysis in a Brassica rapa and Brassica oleracea collection
The closely related species Brassica rapa and B. oleracea encompass a wide range of vegetable, fodder and oil crops. The release of their reference genomes has facilitated resequencing collections of B. rapa and B. oleracea aiming to build their variome datasets. These data can be used to investigate the evolutionary relationships between and within the different species and the domestication o...
متن کاملNovel flowering time variation in the resynthesized polyploid Brassica napus.
Recent molecular data using resynthesized polyploids of Brassica napus established that genome changes can occur rapidly after polyploid formation. In this study we present data that de novo phenotypic variation for flowering time also occurs rapidly after polyploidization. Two initial polyploid plants were developed by reciprocal crosses of B. rapa and B. oleracea followed by chromosome doubli...
